Every season the City of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the Arts Council surprises us with an innovative preview of the upcoming Piccolo Spoleto Festival.  The Office of Cultural Affairs, founded by Charleston Arts Icon, Ellen Dressler Moryl, and now ably headed by Scott Watson, has done it once again.  Artists from the faculties of both Charleston Southern’s Horton School of Music and the Charleston Academy of Music (CAM) will be on hand along with Caleb Borick, the young Charleston pianist who reminds us of Gilmore Young Artist Award winner Micah McLaurin when he was 14 years of age.

CAM faculty members Irina Pevzner (piano), Tomas Jakubek (violin) and Yun Hao Jiang (cello) make up the Terranova Piano Trio and they have Dvorak’s famous Piano Trio #4,Dumky in store for us.  Also from the CAM, guitarist Ulyana Machneva will treat us to The Old Linden Tree by Sergei Rudnev, and Fuoco by Roland Dyens.  Charleston Southern soprano Jill Terhaar Lewis, accompanied on piano by Brad Parker will sing works by Ives, Kern and Gershwin; and pianist Parker will be featured on Wild’s virtuosic arrangement of Gershwin’s Embraceable You.  The program concludes with young Caleb performing Frederic Chopin’s Étude Op. 10, No. 3, in E major and Franz Liszt’s Après une Lecture de Dante, Fantasia quasi Sonata.

You will hear a collection of Charleston’s finest on May 7th, and they will again be featured during Piccolo Spoleto in the Spotlight Concert Series, the Early Music Series, the Bishop Gadsden Recital Series as well as the Youth Music series.  What a way to prepare for Charleston’s festival season beginning.
