Town of Seabrook Island Hurricane Irma Update No. 3, September 7, 3:00pm

As of 3:00 PM this afternoon, September 7th, the Town of Seabrook Island has moved to Op Con 3 – Preparation for Hurricane. At his press conference this afternoon, Governor McMaster indicated that he would issue an Evacuation Order effective as of Saturday September 9th at 10:00 AM. It was not clear when the Governor intends to issue that order. The Governor also indicated that wide spread power outages should be expected.

Once the Governor’s Evacuation Order becomes effective, two things will happen. Firstly, a County Sheriff’s Department patrol car will be stationed at the circle to control traffic coming on to the Island. Before the storm hits, no one will be allowed on the Island without either a Kiawah or Seabrook Island driver’s license. After the storm hits, and before the mayor has given an indication that residents may safely return to the Island, no one will be permitted past the circle without an authorization signed by the mayor. Secondly if you wait until the Governor orders an evacuation, your route will be dictated by law enforcement through Walterboro and on to Aiken. Leave now to avoid traffic congestion and to have a choice of evacuation routes.

At the Governor’s Evacuation Order, all Town and POA services will be suspended. If you stay, you will be on your own! Town Hall will be closed tomorrow, September 8th at noon.

Property owners and visitors should review the hurricane preparedness steps posted on the Town’s website under “Emergency Preparedness.”

Seems there should be a process for owners without seabrook licenses to get on the island after the order goes into effect. Suppose you leave and then realize you forgot something – you can’t come back? If you have a seabrook owner car decal you should be able to access just like someone who lives here full time.
