TOWN OF SEABROOK ISLAND Hurricane Irma UPDATE No. 8

With the imminent threat of storm surge on Monday, Sept 11, Charleston County is moving to increased readiness status OPCON 1.
Charleston County maintains that we are to expect a storm surge of 3-4 feet, Monday, Sept 11 around high tide (forecast to be 7 feet) at 12:30. The combination of storm surge and high tide would produce a high tide equivalent of 11 feet. With an 11 feet equivalent high tide, widespread inundation of Seabrook Island roads is likely.
It’s reasonable to expect that Seabrook Island Road outside the SIPOA security gate will be flooded for as long as 24 hours from 12:30 PM on Monday, Sept. 11.
It’s also reasonable to expect Berkeley Electric will shut down power to Seabrook Island. If that happens, people should minimize the use of the sewer system. There is no need to compromise sanitation, but avoid showers, clothes washing, dish washing, etc.
The National Weather Service has advised that there is an increased concern for tornados in the Charleston area from 4:00AM-6:00 PM Monday. Also, winds of 35-40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected, tonight through tomorrow. Rainfall is expected to be 4-8 inches.
To emphasize, putting tides, surge, rainfall, and wind together we can expect significant Island wide flooding. Residents are encouraged to relocate from flood prone, low lying areas to higher ground.
