Outage Update From Town of Seabrook Island

TOWN OF SEABROOK ISLAND Hurricane Irma UPDATE No. 19

Date 14 September 2017 Time 7:00 pm

Late Wednesday afternoon, September 13th, the Town advised that it had been informed by Berkeley Electric that its crews would shortly have worked their “maximum permitted daily hours” and would resume work at 5:00 AM the following morning.

A number of residents have interpreted that message as meaning that either Berkeley’s employees have refused to put in additional hours or that Berkeley had refused to pay overtime. The Town would like to assure you that neither of those interpretations is correct. The issue is solely one of safety. Crews are working extended hours – as many as 18 hours a day. Nevertheless, the number of consecutive hours they work is limited for safety reasons. Berkeley’s crews are working with high voltage equipment where fatigue induced mistakes can be costly both in terms of individual safety and restoring power in a timely manner.

We recognize that a number of residents have not had power since Monday afternoon. It is both inconvenient and frustrating. Please be assured that Berkeley is working as diligently as possible to restore power to the entire Island
