On March 29 a very informative presentation was made to Seabrook, Kiawah and Johns Island residents concerning identifying and preventing child sexual abuse. Deborah LaRoche representing Darkness to Light, facilitated the event which helped the attendees understand the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse and how to recognize the signs and to find ways to keep children safe. Darkness to Light (D2L) is a nationwide program that helps adults understand the issue of childhood sexual abuse. The D2L program that she presented, Stewards of Children, used two video presentations and a group discussion to show the depth of the problem. The powerful voices and pictures of those who had been abused as children engaged the audience and made it clear that children who are harmed sexually by adults are damaged for years. Most of the audience had no idea of how many children are abused every year, usually by people they know.
The Darkness to Light (D2L) program was presented by the Kiawah-Seabrook Exchange Club’s Child Abuse Prevention Committee. Ray Hoover chaired the event.
This program is available for any group, large or small and is offered through the D2L trainer Ms LaRoche at firstname.lastname@example.org (photo above). It is a worthwhile program for any adult and even though most Seabrookers do not have young children, they have grandchildren and great grandchildren and it is information that everyone should know.
