Meet the Candidates Event – May 30

The Towns of Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island will co-host a “Meet the Candidates” event for the two candidates for the Charleston County Council District 9 Republican Primary, Joe Qualey and Jenny Costa Honeycutt. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 30 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Kiawah Island Municipal Center (4475 Betsy Kerrison Parkway).

Meet the Candidates Event Schedule

1:00 – 1:30 pm – Candidate meet and greet
1:30 – 1:40 pm – Candidate introductions (5 minutes each)
1:40 – 2:40 pm – Candidate Q&A with Mayors Ciancio & Weaver
2:40 – 3:00 pm – Wrap up and final meet and greet opportunity

During the Q&A session, Mayor Ron Ciancio of Seabrook Island and Mayor Craig Weaver of Kiawah Island will be asking the candidates a series of questions on behalf of residents of both jurisdictions. Any resident who wishes to suggest a question for the candidates may do so in advance of the meeting. Questions should be submitted no later than Monday, May 21st. Seabrook Island residents should send their questions to jcronin@townofseabrookisland.org.

The Towns of Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island make up an important part of Charleston County Council’s District 9 jurisdiction, and a good voter turnout can determine the election. The Republican primary election for the District 9 Council race will be held on Tuesday, June 12th. There is no Democrat primary for the District 9 Council race on June 12th.

Why Does This June 12 Primary Election Matter?

  1. If the Republican nominee for County Council’s District 9 wins election in November, she or he will vote for the next four years on all county matters and issues affecting Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island, as well as the remainder of the district, including James Island, Folly Beach, and parts of West Ashley and Johns Island.
  2. There are a number of very important county issues that affect and impact the residents of Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island, such as road safety and congestion, the delivery of public safety services, and the continued growth of Johns Island. These issues will demand attention during the next four-year term.
  3. Historically, the services furnished by Charleston County to Kiawah and Seabrook Islands have not been commensurate to the proportion of the County’s revenue derived from our two communities.
