Diabetes Prevention Program Begins May 30

The National Diabetes Prevention Program to prevent diabetes is being launched in our area.  This program is focused on people who have pre-diabetes, which is when your blood sugar level is higher than normal.  Higher than normal blood sugar level increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.  If you have pre-diabetes, losing weight, eating healthy and being more active can cut your risk of getting type 2 diabetes in HALF.

Do I qualify for the program?  Registration is based on eligibility criteria:
– are overweight or obese, and
– are 18 years or older and are not pregnant
– have, or are at high risk for developing, pre-diabetes, but do not have pre-diabetes
– have a history of gestational diabetes
– can commit to attending a yearlong program of classes

What will I learn?  This yearlong program provides a lifestyle coach to guide you in the skills and habits you need to lose weight, be more physically active, and manage stress and to make lasting changes to prevent diabetes.  A certified lifestyle coach teaches classes.  This program is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Diabetes Prevention Program which has been show to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by 60% in those at risk for diabetes.

Where are the classes?  Faith Lutheran Church, 3374 Maybank Hwy, Johns Island

When does the program start?  There will be an informational session on May 23 at 3pm followed by the program which starts May 30, 2018.  Classes meet every Wednesday, from 3:00-4:00pm for 16 weeks, followed by 6 monthly maintenance classes.
