Nominations Due For COVAR Officers

It is that time of year again!  All of our Council of Villas and Regimes Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) come up for election each year. The COVAR Bylaws require that a Notice to Accept Nominations for COVAR Officers be sent 45 days prior to the first meeting of the year (Wednesday, January 9, 2019). We are therefore accepting nominations for officers starting November 26th. The following is a timetable for the process ending with the results of an election being announced at the January 9th meeting.

December 14–Nominations are due by submission to the COVAR Secretary, Cindy Brown, at cbbrowncpa@gmail.com. Anyone, including the nominee, can nominate a candidate for a COVAR Officer position. Each nominee may include a one-page bio with the submission.

December 17–Ballots and bios are e-mailed to each COVAR association/regime president whose association/regime has paid 2018 dues.

January 7—Ballots are due to COVAR Secretary

January 9–Winning candidates are announced. Newly elected officers assume their duties at the end of the meeting.

It should be noted that three of the current officers have agreed to serve for another year if elected. They are:

President – Debra Lehman
Vice President – Alison Standard
Secretary–Cindy Brown

Chanukah in the Square, Sunday December 9

This year’s Chanukah celebrations begin in the evening of Sunday, December 2 and run through Monday, December 10. The holiday celebrates the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem where, according to legend, Jews had risen up against their oppressors in the Maccabean revolt. The Temple Oil that was only sufficient for one night lasted for eight, hence the eight candles.

Charleston’s annual “Chanukah in the Square” will be held Sunday, December 9, from 4-6 pm in Marion Square. This event has been held annually for 11 years and is the largest Jewish celebration in South Carolina.

There will be booths for games, crafts, food, and drink. In addition, the celebration will have jump castles and face painting and all things Jewish related. It is a family friendly event and is open to the entire community. Over 1,500 people attend the event each year. Live entertainment throughout the event will conclude with remarks from state and local dignitaries and a lighting ceremony of the Menorah.

It is the largest Jewish event in South Carolina and is special because it brings everyone together. While every synagogue and Jewish organization is involved and engaged, it is open to the community at large and proclaims the message of Chanukah and religious freedom.  This is an important part of Charleston’s history as the Holy City, renowned for its freedom of religion and tolerance of minority religions.
