Gibbes Museum: Artful Thinking Tour Changed to February 5

Date Change: This tour was originally scheduled for February 12, 2020 but has been rescheduled to February 5, 2020 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm.

Used as a trick to achieve the perfect composition, the Rule of Thirds can be seen throughout the galleries, especially in the newest exhibition Central to Their Lives: Southern Women Artists in the Johnson Collection. Join a group of physicians for this unique tour and explore the collection and temporary exhibitions with a different lens, focusing on building observation skills and fostering discussion.

Free for members and included with admission for non-members.

Register by Thursday to Vote in SC Democratic Primary

Many new to SC don’t know that “South Carolina has an open primary system. This means that any registered voter may cast a ballot in either party’s primary–but not both,” as reported by Caitlin Byrd for The Post and Courier. The deadline to register to vote in the South Carolina February 29 Democratic presidential primary is Thursday, January 30, 2020. February Artist of the Month – Brenda Tilson

In February, the Seabrook Island Artist Guild will showcase one of its long-time active members, Brenda Tilson.

Brenda’s paintings will be on display in the front hall of The Lake House during the month of February, 2020.

A longtime SIAG active member and exhibitor, Brenda holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture and Art. She also has a BA in Art Education from Fairmont State College. In addition to having been selected as a Juried Member of the Pastel Society of America in 2016, she is also a member of the Piedmont Pastel Society, Charlotte, North Carolina. Her display will consist of architectural drawings.

Gibbes: Central to Their Lives: Southern Women Artists in the Johnson Collection

Central to Their Lives
January 17 – May 3, 2020

A new exhibit recently opened at the Gibbes Museum and will be on display until May 3, 2020. Spanning the decades between the late 1890s and early 1960s, Central to Their Lives brings together for the first time the paintings and sculptures of forty-two diverse women artists who made significant contributions to the art of the South. This exhibition examines the challenges female artists faced during a period in which women’s social, cultural, and political roles were being redefined and reinterpreted. For tickets, click here.

New Lake House Yoga Instructor

The Lake House is excited to introduce their new Yoga Instructor. Her name is Lisa Andersen and she will be taking over Gentle Yoga on Mondays at 8:15 am beginning in February.

Lisa Anderson is a retired teacher and is currently living on Seabrook Island. She has her RYT-200 Yoga Certification from Yoga Fit Training Systems and is certified with Yoga Alliance. She has 8 years of experience teaching yoga for strength and flexibility.

Lisa is an avid believer that yoga brings together the mind and body to help heal the soul and relieve chronic pain. One of the many things she has enjoyed doing is volunteering to help teachers reduce stress and anxiety through yoga. She is looking forward to helping others find the benefits of yoga that have been important in her own life.

Outside of her interest in yoga, Lisa enjoys kayaking and traveling with her husband, hiking, and staying active.

Please help us welcome Lisa Andersen to The Lake House Team and check out Gentle Yoga at 8:15 am on Mondays.

Backpack Buddies Response Overwhelming

The response for sponsorships for the 2020 Backpack Buddies Challenge was overwhelming.  Mike Gorski, owner of Island Transportation Services, launched this project 4 years ago to help raise additional funds at the Backpack Buddies Chili Cook-off.

The Tidelines post on Thursday was among several sources that resulted in new friends (sponsorships) being added for a total of 28 friends (sponsorships.)  To see the complete updated list, click here.

As a result of this year’s lofty goal of $50,000, Mike is starting to take donations now. The friends (sponsorships) are matching your donations dollar-for-dollar.  All donations are tax-deductible as permitted by law. The Chili Cook-off, along with The Gorski and Friends Challenge, benefits Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island and the Backpack Buddies Group of Kiawah Women’s Foundation. The two organizations are both 501(c)(3) nonprofits whose mission is to feed local hungry school children on the weekend and during school holidays. These children are supplied breakfast and lunch by the schools but often were being left to fend for themselves on the weekends. They are currently feeding over 530 local children each week.

Making a resident donation is very easy. Just call or text Mike Gorski at 864-316-3894 and tell him your donation amount. He will provide all of the details for the different ways that you can donate.

Mike says, “Thank you in advance for your support and please, island residents, don’t forget to get your donations matched dollar-for-dollar by making your donations today!”

With over 35 years as a trained and licensed Interior Designer, Karen Babb has significant experience in all applications of Interior Design and looks forward to sharing her expertise with our members and guests.

Her uncommon passion for exceptional design keeps Karen dedicated to working with customers who seek innovative solutions to their problems. Her open-minded, imaginative and eager approach to design is driven by the detail-oriented high standards which are apparent in her work. As a responsible designer who is sensitive to the demands and needs of her clients, Ms. Babb has established an excellent reputation for having the ability to turn design concepts into reality, creating spaces that are visually exciting, inviting and intelligent. In addition to her private practice, Karen is also a member of the design staff at GDC. We know you will not want to miss Karen’s presentation, Feng Shui Basics: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!

The Colour of Music Festival announces the eighth annual Colour of Music Festival (COMF) January 29-February 1, 2020 at three historic Charleston locations showcasing leading black classical artists from France, Britain, Colombia, and the Caribbean. The 2020 winter Chamber Series will feature members of an ‘elite’ Colour of Music Festival Octet and Quintet group of musicians highlighting performances that include Felix Mendelssohn’s Grand Octet and Florence B. Price’s and Johannes Brahms Piano Quintets.

Since 2013 the Colour of Music Festival (COMF) has brought international, national, and regional classically trained black musicians of African descent to share their musical talents, knowledge, and inspiration to Charleston. Since 2018 the Festival has also traveled to leading collegiate venues and performance halls in Washington DC, Atlanta, Houston, Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Richmond.
