SINHG Awards Education Grants

The Seabrook Island Natural History Group has announced six annual education grants to fund spring field trips for students at Haut Gap Middle School and Mt. Zion Elementary, for birding studies at St. John’s High School and for a gardening project at Haut Gap. The grants, totaling nearly $2,700, will provide materials and transportation for trips focusing on geology, history, marine mammals, birding and agriculture, with visits to sites as close by as Camp St. Christopher and as far away as Exploration Hannon in the Blue Ridge mountains.

SINHG Grants Jan 2020

The grant process was administered by SINHG Board member Rich Siegel. “These grants are an important part of SINHG’s mission to further learning about our ecology and history,” said SINHG president Julia Thogmartin. “We look forward to offering similar grant opportunities during the 2020/2021 school year.”

Seabrook Island Results from the 120th Christmas Bird Count

For the fifth year, Seabrook Island Birders (SIB) participated in the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on Friday January 3, 2020 as part of the Sea Islands CBC. This was the 120 Christmas Bird Count since its creation in 1900.

Aija Konrad – CBC North Beach – Ed KonradThe day started considerably mild with temperatures in the high 60’s, but strong winds and rain, fog and dropping temperatures later in the day slowed our birding. Eleven volunteers birded in “the field” at seven major “hot spots” on Seabrook Island:

      • North Beach
      • Camp St. Christopher
      • Palmetto Lake
      • Jenkins Point
      • SIPOA Maintenance Center
      • Equestrian Center
      • Bohicket Marina

Aija and Ed Konrad win the prize for the “Most Steps” in the day!

Aija’s steps – CBC North Beach

Eight additional volunteers birded their backyard feeders and/or in their neighborhood. Highlights included the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and an Orange-crowned Warbler!

Orange-crowned Warbler at feeder – Patricia Schaeffer

A total of 98 different bird species accounting for more than 3,000 birds were sighted by our volunteers during more than 80 equivalent hours.

Three of our members were able to join Aaron Given at the Kiawah Town Office for the annual Sea Islands CBC Countdown. More than 150 species were documented in the 15 mile diameter circle which includes Seabrook Island.

We appreciate all the time and effort made by our 19 volunteers and hope even more will join us next year for this annual bird count!

Mike Gorski and Friends 2020 Challenge for Backpack Buddies

He’s back once again and this year he has brought back most of his clients, friends, and fellow business owners to smash last year’s goal of raising $40,000.

This year’s goal is going to be a whopping $50,000…yes, that’s right, $50,000 for Backpack Buddies.

Backpack Buddies Challenge 2019

Mike Gorski, owner of Island Transportation Services, launched this project 4 years ago to help raise additional funds at the Backpack Buddies Chili Cook-off. Each year, thus far, has proven to be more successful in raising funds for this great and worthy cause that serves so many children in need. He is back once again with most of his friends from last year. To achieve this lofty goal of $50,000, Mike needs to secure only 4 more new friends (sponsorships) at $1,000. His plan is to secure 25 total friends (sponsorships) creating $25,000 in matching monies. He will then ask the residents of the islands, as in the past, to donate. Each donation will then be matched by the sponsorship monies dollar-for-dollar. He only needs 4 more friends (sponsorships) to help achieve this goal. Please call Mike if he can count on you to be 1 of the 4 needed.

Making a resident donation is very easy. Just call or text Mike Gorski at 864-316-3894 and tell him your donation amount. He will provide all of the details for the different ways that you can donate.

To see those sponsors participating so far this year, click here. A great big thank you goes out to these companies for their generous contributions to the cause. Continue reading “Mike Gorski and Friends 2020 Challenge for Backpack Buddies”

The barcode reader in the right barcode-entry lane is down. Therefore, the gate arm which is activated by the reader, isn’t operating. Repair techs are scheduled to arrive to service the reader on Friday morning.

The right barcode-entry lane will be re-routed to the left lane during low traffic hours overnight. If you’re arriving at the gate during nighttime hours, please follow the traffic cones and move to the left lane for entry.

Security officers will be positioned in the barcode lane during peak entry times in the morning to keep traffic moving.

We appreciate your patience while techs make repairs.

For women artists working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was difficult to assert themselves in an environment dominated by men. However, by the 1950s, female artists had made significant inroads and were gaining wider representation in museum collections, exhibitions, and academe. Martha Severens will discuss how these women persisted against bias and discrimination and developed successful careers in the art world. A book signing and gallery tour will follow.
