Visitors will be able to observe classes and ask questions of instructors and volunteers about the benefits of activities offered in partnership with CATR’s team of specially trained horses. King Tides in the Charleston Area Nov 4-8

A King Tide is a non-scientific term used to describe high tides that are higher than normal. They usually occur during a full or new moon or during specific seasons throughout the year. They can cause flooding of low-lying areas resulting in road closures that may disrupt normal daily routines. This is particularly true when a king tide coincides with significant precipitation.

The 2021 predicted king tides are:

  • Nov 4-8
  • Dec 3-7

Remember to clear debris blocking the drains near your home before predicted king tides and if your home is prone to flooding, you might want to prepare your ground level for flooding.

SCDOT warns: Please use caution in areas that are impacted by flooding. It takes just 12 inches of water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. Never drive around barricades. Turn around, don’t drown.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is leading the South Carolina King Tides Initiative to document the effect that extreme tide events have on our state’s beaches, coastal waterways, private property, and public infrastructure. For more information on king tides and the Initiative, click here.

Meet at the parking lot by The Station at Freshfields at 8:00 am.

There is a limit of 12 people. We would like to keep to three cars with four people in each car. Passes for Kiawah will be obtained the night before.

Brown & White Pickup November 5

The next monthly Brown & White Pickup is Friday, November 5, 2021.

Bulk items can be left curbside by 7:00 am. Place items including furniture, appliances, grills, lawn furniture, or other similar household items where you would normally leave your trash and recycling.

Hazardous waste such as old paint cans, electronics, batteries, fluorescent lights, and old yard or household chemicals can be taken to the Maintenance Area (adjacent to the Community Garden) that morning between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Hazardous materials must be handed directly to the attendant on duty. The materials cannot be left on the ground.

If you are planning to put bikes out on Brown & White Pickup day, Sarah Quinn is collecting them for the Bicycles for Humanity (B4H) Program. You can call her to pick them up. Her phone number is (843) 768-4407. Sarah has saved more than 1,800 bikes from the landfill! Find out more about B4H here.

Before you put your used furniture or other items on the curb for Brown & White Pickup on Friday, consider recycling it with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity Restore. Contact the store at 843-559-4009 for more information and to arrange for free pick-up of large items.
