Seabrookers Support Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic at Charity Event

On a beautiful afternoon, Seabrook’s Racquet Sports Club hosted its largest islandwide annual charity event of the year supporting Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic (www.bifmc.org). The biggest turnout ever included 44 tennis players and 20 pickleball players in a round robin social format. The event usually has raffles but this year, innovated to a silent auction. The items included evening box seats (best seats in the stadium!) for the Credit One Charleston Tennis Open for four separate nights generously donated by Hutchie and Jerry Cummin. Other highlights were a beach tote, pouch and matching towel from Lilly Pulitzer and a beautiful bag from J. McLaughlin. Both companies are repeat donors! Local artist and member of the Seabrook Art Guild, Debbe Falls Finkelstein, offered two beautiful original resin paintings.

Brenda Falls, Director of the Barrier Islands Free medical Clinic, was a guest speaker at the event. She described the mission of BIFMC during post event hospitality of pizza and beverages attended by many new community members. Seabrookers islandwide contributed to this formidable charity raising just over $10,000 – a high hurdle for next year’s event!

Charleston Gaillard Center Presents The Piano Guys

April 25, 2022 at 7:30 pm

Since their serendipitous start in a Southern Utah piano shop, The Piano Guys have proven to be a powerhouse group without limits. Arriving as a musical phenomenon seemingly overnight, the quartet of Jon Schmidt [pianist, songwriter], Steven Sharp Nelson [cellist, songwriter], Paul Anderson [producer, videographer], and Al van der Beek [music producer, songwriter] have delivered bold compositions that transcend boundaries of style and genre, a boundlessness that has since translated into a massively-successful career. Their 2020 album release “10” was a celebration of The Piano Guys’ 10-year anniversary. The album included their most popular hits from the past 10 years as well as brand-new arrangements. Steven and Jon are gearing up to hit the road to perform their new music and share their great humor.

Since formally introducing themselves in 2011, The Piano Guys have released five studio albums, two Christmas releases, and a fan-favorite live album, earning six No. 1 debuts on Billboard’s Top Classical Albums chart and garnering an impressive 2 billion-plus global streams, over 1.6 billion YouTube views, and averaging nearly 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. They have sold out concerts in almost every corner of the world and attracted a diehard audience of millions. The Piano Guys have appeared in The New York Times, Fast Company, BuzzFeed, Mashable, People, been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, and performed on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Tonight Show.

SINHG Explores Downtown Charleston

More than thirty SINHG members joined two separate explorations earlier this month – one of downtown Charleston’s abundant dining opportunities, and another of some of the city’s lesser known alleyways and passages. A culinary tour of upper King Street visited some of the peninsula’s newest restaurants, while a walking tour of downtown’s least known passageways finished up with a delicious southern lunch at the historic State Street dining room, complete with ham biscuits, gumbo and banana pudding. Later in the day, a session at The Lake House was dedicated to building the perfect charcuterie board with members supplied with a slate board and food for their creations. SINHG trips continue through mid-May. A schedule of autumn trips for members is in development.

SEADOGS 2022 Annual Meeting

Tuesday, April 26, 6:00 pm

The Lake House – Back Lawn

Featuring Ric Sommons, owner of Dolittle’s

SEADOGS, the Seabrook Island Dog Owners Group, announced recently their rescheduled Annual Meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, with a rain date of Wednesday, April 27. The event will begin at 6:00 pm. Participants are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and are welcome to bring their own picnic dinners and drinks. Please leave your furry friends at home, as dogs will not be allowed to attend the meeting. All Seabrook Island residents are invited to attend the meeting. We are always looking for new members, so please join us to hear about the good work SEADOGS does for the Seabrook Island community.

On this year’s agenda, the officers will provide an annual review of 2021 for the SEADOGS organization. During the second half of the meeting, we are honored to present a conversation with Ric Sommons, founder and owner of Dolittle’s, our neighborhood pet store. Ric will give a presentation on various kinds of dog foods, a subject he is very passionate about.

Also as a reminder, it is red knot season here on Seabrook Island. If you are on the beach with your dog, please stay far away from the flocks of birds and give them plenty of space. Please leash your dogs and walk around the birds – even if they happen to be in the off-leash area (apparently the birds don’t read signs and will feed anywhere there is food). Remember, do not let your dogs chase the birds as they are trying to fatten up for their long migration.

For more information on the event or about SEADOGS, please visit our website, sidogs.org or contact us at siseadogs@gmail.com.

Landscape Median Project Update

SIPOA is working to complete the landscape median project. This week, the contractor is milling and repaving the asphalt surface. We understand today’s milling activity has created delays of up to 15-20 minutes to leave the island.  On Friday morning at 9:30 am, paving activity will begin. Residents can expect potential similar delays from 9:30 am through 5:00 pm on Friday, March 25, 2022.  Please plan accordingly and exercise caution while driving in this area.

MUSC Sea Islands Medical Pavilion

Living at Seabrook or Kiawah is wonderful and we have almost everything we need for our community, but one of the few things we don’t have is emergency medical care. The good news is that this will soon be addressed. Dr. Thomas Crawford, PHD., System Chief Operating Officer for MUSC Health, recently spoke to Kiawah – Seabrook Exchange Club members and he laid out plans and answered questions about the upcoming construction of the MUSC Medical Pavilion. With the nearest emergency room 25 miles away from the islands, emergency medical care is an urgent need for our community. The medical pavilion will include 24/7 emergency care with two trauma rooms and a helipad. In addition, a helicopter can get a patient to the downtown hospital in ten minutes.

With the facility in place, the long drives for routine medical care that we currently endure could be a thing of the past. In addition to a trauma center, the facility will also provide both primary care and VIP medicine, state-of-the-art imaging and other technologies, select specialty care and physical therapy.  The facility will also incorporate telemedicine facilities to connect with MUSC’s other specialties if needed. Construction is scheduled to begin this year with the facility completed by year-end 2023.

The Sea Islands Medical Pavilion addresses an urgent need for our community and it will also make the drive to the doctor for routine medical care a matter of minutes instead of hours. It will be a welcome addition to our community.

Dr. Thomas Crawford of MUSC and Jack Wilson, President of the Exchange Club of Kiawah-Seabrook at the club meeting March 16.
