Charleston County Promotes Smart911 Signup

smart911At the SIPOA Board meeting on April 18th, St. Johns Fire Battalion Chief Gary Lore made an extensive presentation on the Smart911 service now available to Charleston County residents. April 30th has been declared Smart911 Day in both Charleston County and the rest of the nation.

Smart911 is a private service being used by a large and growing number of public safety agencies and first responders across the country. The product was developed by Rave Mobile Safety, a company founded in 2004 and based in Massachusetts.

As explained by Chief Lore, the idea behind Smart911 is to assist emergency responders by having individuals submit important personal safety information to a database through the Smart911 web site, specifying a mobile phone number that uniquely identifies their account. Public safety agencies then enter into agreements with Rave to enable responders to access the data when a 911 emergency call is received from that phone number.

The advantage in using the service comes in time savings and enhanced location information. Emergency calls from cell phones cannot be accurately tracked if the caller is in distress and does not provide an address. Continue reading “Charleston County Promotes Smart911 Signup”

SINHG Dinner Cruise on Spirit Line

SINHG spirit cruise 4-16

Twenty-three SINHG members braved a rainstorm while driving to the point of embarkation for the dinner cruise on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. However, the rain gods were good to us: as soon as we started sailing, the sun came out and after a while we saw the most beautiful sunset.
The four-course dinner was excellent, and a good time was had by all.

Seabrook Guitarist Featured at Earth Day Celebration

IMG_0320
Bob and Adam at Fischer’s

Bob Becker has graciously accepted an offer to provide a little “earthy” music from 9 to 10 am at the Earth Day Celebration this Friday, April 21, at the Lake House.

His easy listening, soft rock (60’s and 70’s), and folk songs are very fitting for the occasion. Bob has been playing guitar and singing since age 15 and has performed publicly for about 40 years. He has provided music for the Seabrook Island Tree-Lighting ceremony for the past three years and accompanies his son Adam at Fischer’s Sports Pub every other Tuesday night.

He and his wife Vicky are full-time residents of Seabrook. Bob volunteers for the Turtle Patrol and Adopt-A-Highway. Both groups will be represented at the Celebration.

If you are collecting corks and batteries, don’t forget that you can dispose of them at the Lake House for recycling on Friday.

Have you ever taken a test to find out the size of your carbon foot print? The test will tell you how well you are conserving your resources and how you can shrink your footprint. The Nature Conservancy’s carbon footprint website is www.nature.org/greenliving.

Come enjoy all this Earth Day has to offer. The weatherman is predicting partly sunny skies with temperatures in the 70s.
