Maybank Highway and Main Road Zoning Project

The Charleston County Zoning and Planning Department maintains an Annual Work program approved by County Council. Two important projects listed in this program are to “Review and revise the Maybank Highway Corridor Overlay Zoning District in coordination with the City of Charleston” and “Create an Overlay Zoning District for Main Road”. The Charleston County and City of Charleston Planning Departments have begun this collaborative planning effort to create consistent land use, zoning, and development requirements for both the Maybank Highway Corridor and the Main Road Corridor. As part of the initial public input process, two community surveys have been prepared; one specifically tailored to the Maybank Highway Corridor on James Island, and one specifically tailored to the Maybank Highway and Main Road Corridors on Johns Island.

Please click the button or buttons below to complete either or both surveys. The surveys will remain available through Friday, August 31, 2018. The results of the surveys will help guide the preparation of these draft overlays for the Maybank Highway Corridor on James Island and the Maybank Highway and Main Road Corridors on Johns Island. Once draft overlays are prepared, they will be available for review and comment online, as well as at future community meetings. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey!

Traffic Backup on Main Road

On Wednesday, August 15, at about 10:45am, Mike Gorski of Island Transportation reported that there are two large mobile homes being brought on to the island with a John’s Island police escort. Traffic is backed up southbound towards Seabrook. Outbound is fine but it’s going to take them a while to get those houses where they need to go so there likely will be a lot of backed up traffic on Main and Bohicket.

If you are heading on or off the island, you may want to take an alternate route.

Traffic Back on Main Road and River Road

We just received notification today, August 2, at 5:00 pm, that traffic is being diverted from Main Road taking a right onto  Brownswood Road heading off the island.  It is also being diverted coming onto the island after the Limehouse Bridge taking a left onto River Road.  Unfortunately, this has led to a traffic backup on River Road after Maybank Highway heading towards Seabrook Island.

If you can postpone plans to leave or come back to the island, you may want to wait a while or travel Main Road and Maybank Highway to give traffic a chance to clear up.
