Join Respite Care Charleston for the Charleston Stage Performance of Helium!
Respite Care Charleston is delighted to be partnering with Charleston Stage for its February 11, 2018 performance of Helium!
Helium tells the story of Gramms, a mischievous grandmother who has swiped her daughter’s credit card again. Gramms has ordered another colorful bunch of helium-filled balloons and is soon off on flights of fancy to the seashore of her youth, her high school chemistry lab, and even a battle with the Klingons from an old Star Trek episode. Though filled with humor, Helium tells the dramatic story of a family struggling with a beloved family member whose slipping away due to dementia draws them closer.
First produced at Piccolo Spoleto in 1990, the Julian Wiles comedy won instant acclaim. The Post and Courier raved: “Helium soars–it’s the kind of play that can leave a lump in your throat.” Productions in theatres around the country followed, delighting audiences with its whimsy, warmth, and gentle humor. “Of the more than 25 plays I’ve written over the years, Helium is my favorite,” says Charleston Stage founder and playwright, Julian Wiles. “As we continue our 40th-anniversary celebration I wanted to be sure to include this special play in this celebratory season.”
