Follow the journey of a woman and a song. Inspired by a collection of true stories, Black Pearl Sings! tells the story of Pearl, a Gullah woman from the Sea Islands of South Carolina who finds herself in a Texas jail separated from her daughter, and of the song that might be her ticket home. While imprisoned, Pearl meets Susannah, a white musical historian who thinks Pearl’s songs might be her ticket, too—Susannah’s ticket to a prestigious teaching position at Harvard. Watch as these women discover conflict and common ground—navigating issues of history, race, class and gender, and bonding over a love of music. Will Pearl give Susannah her “ticket” or will Pearl teach Susannah that not everything is for sale? Featuring stunning a cappella renditions of beloved Gullah spirituals and American folk songs, Black Pearl Sings! is sure to leave an impression on audiences long after the curtain closes.
