Seabrook Island Artist Guild (SIAG) welcomes Karen Weihs
Demonstration – November 3 @ 1:30 pm at Oyster Catcher
Workshop – November 4 & 5 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at Oyster Catcher
Seabrook Island Artist Guild presents an art demonstration and
two-day workshop featuring Karen Weihs.

Using the brand of water-soluble oils called Cobra by Royal Talens, Karen will be demonstrating her palette knife and brush technique of a heron in its natural habitat. She will bring various stages of a painting in progress to demonstrate the steps she goes through to complete the painting of a heron. Karen uses transparent colors, nine tubes, to get the layers of this luminous selection of colors to shimmer. She does not use solvents, only water and a fast-drying paste with her Cobra brand.
Although the Cobra brand can be used with solvents and other brands of regular oils, like its sister brand Rembrandt, it’s a game-changer product because it goes both ways. The limited palette she chooses works to keep the colors vibrant. She uses a RGM Pastrello steel palette knife to glide the paint to get a rich glow. Her brushes are mop brushes, 3 different sizes. Her other works she will talk about, will be on display to encourage questions about her technique. Her technique is easy to achieve with the proper tools.

Karen Weihs, a fine arts degree major, worked as a graphic designer and calligrapher after college until she found her passion for oil painting. Using mostly the palette knife, her design sense led her to the quality of pushing landscape work into abstraction. A sought-after teacher, she created her luminous style that led her to be called the “colorist of the south.” She and other artists maintained a successful gallery in Charleston, SC, her birth city, for seventeen years until its closing.
Winning awards, she drew national attention to her painting and joined southern galleries, attracting serious collectors. Her work is in major collections and museums. As a member of The American Women Artists and the prestigious National Salmagundi Club, she continues to enter their competitions while working on art commissions and working for clients. She shows and demos in two Florida galleries. She recently moved full-time from Cashiers, NC, to Venice, FL, with her retired restaurateur husband, Chris, to continue their interest in playing competitive croquet, often as doubles partners.

Karen is continuing her teaching career as an art educator. She is sought after for in-person workshops and mentors through an organization called Mastrius, a Canadian academy for learning and mentoring aspiring students. She is a long-time ambassador for Royal Talens art products, doing Zoom and live demos for their products. She shows regularly in museums and galleries. Karen’s art studio is located at 320 Corelli Drive, Venice, FL, and the phone number is 828-226-4024.
