2015 Fall Lecture Series: The Plantation Landscape
For the final installment of The Charleston Museum’s 2015 Fall Lecture Series, Virginia Beach will present The Plantation Landscape.
This presentation will explore how the Lowcountry provided the perfect laboratory and launch for investigating the New World. It will also examine the enterprising Carolinians who went about taming this landscape for fame and profit, and the dedicated conservationists who labored to rescue it.
Virginia Christian Beach writes for numerous local and regional publications on the subjects of conservation and natural history and has served on the staffs of The Nature Conservancy, the Lowcountry Open Land Trust and the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium. A native of Richmond, Virginia, she graduated from the University of Virginia and then served as a Peace Corps volunteer in East Africa.
Her first book, Medway, a history of a Lowcountry rice plantation, was published by Wyrick & Company with photographs by Tom Blagden. Her most recent book, Rice & Ducks: The Surprising Convergence that Saved the Carolina Lowcountry, published by Evening Post Books, is the recipient of the 2015 Independent Publisher’s gold medal for best southeastern nonfiction. Beach is an avid birder and nature enthusiast, and lives in Charleston, South Carolina with her husband and two children.
