The safety and security of our Seabrook Island is important to all of us. Year after year, in our annual surveys, more than 80% of property owners rate island safety and security as very important to them; we are very fortunate to live in a very safe community. However, our security staff is very limited, with only 3 officers on duty at any given time so we must make sure that we use their services efficiently as this is also a major expense for property owners. Property owners occasionally call our Safety and Security staff for assistance with issues which do not involve either safety or security or emergencies, thereby limiting our staff’s ability to respond to actual safety issues. Some recent examples of inappropriate calls include: • Request for assistance in changing a light bulb. • A property owner reported that their water smelled bad, which was caused by a defective water heater. • Starting car batteries. • Repairing flat tires. • A request to help carry groceries. We can all play a part in using our security staff more efficiently by making sure that calls to our safety & security staff are limited to actual safety, security and emergency issues. It’s our (your) money so let’s spend it wisely. Property owners should call property maintenance companies, auto service companies or local concierge’ services for routine service needs which do not involve safety & security issues and this will allow our staff more time to focus on safety related issues. However, if you are not sure whether your concern is a safety/security issue then please do not hesitate to call them just to be safe. Let’s use our resources wisely and continue to keep our island safe. Thank you for your cooperation.

I am thankful that the Security Committee saw fit to post this message. I sit in amazement that they had to do it, though. The fact that some property owners on this Island seem NOT to have the good sense to discern what is a matter of security and what is a matter of personal need or self-gratification is astounding. Really! People think they should be able to call the Security staff to change light bulbs or carry groceries to their kitchens? What have we come to? Is self-absorption so deeply imbedded in our culture that people have the gall to make these types of requests? Get a grip,people, this is Seabrook Island in 2016, not the Palace of Versailles in July 1789!
