Lowcountry Salt Maker Speaks at Kiawah-Seabrook Exchange Club, 07/20

Bertha Booker, Lowcountry salt maker, shared her story on becoming the Southeast’s first permitted salt maker with exchange members on Wednesday evening, July 20th, at The Seabrook Island Club.

After being laid off from a corporate position, Bertha entered the world of harvesting salt by simply boiling some seawater when she had forgotten to bring some salt seasoning for dinner while kayaking on Edisto Island.

She now harvests seawater by boat at Botany Bay, brings it back to her salt ponds on Wadmalaw Island and waits for the sun and breezes to evaporate the water until the mineral-rich salt remains. Bertha processes and packages her products and sells them at the Charleston Farmers Market and other locations.

Exchange members enjoyed tasting Bertha’s Botany Bay flavorful salts at dinner. For more information on Ms. Booker and her products check out Botany Bay Sea Salt on FaceBook.
