Food Safety – Freezer/Refrigerator

Most of us came back to the island with quite a bit of work to be done on the outside of our houses.  There are trees and branches down as well as debris all over the yard.

There is also work inside the house. We lost electricity sometime on Saturday and depending on when the electricity came back to your area,  your freezer and refrigerator were out of commission for a period of time.

Foodsafety.gov has several pages and charts devoted to how long food is edible in this situation.   The short version is that food is safe according to the following guidelines:

In the Freezer:

  • About 48 hours if the freezer is full
  • About 24 hours if the freezer is half full

In the Refrigerator

  • About 2 hours for  perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers
  • About 4 hours for the rest,  if the door hasn’t been opened

Never taste food to determine its safety! You can’t rely on appearance or odor to determine whether food is safe.

The take away from this website is:  When in doubt – throw it out!
