Fresh Produce Giveaway Was Held April 1

Fresh Produce Giveaway

On Saturday, April 1, 2017, The Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation held a Fresh Produce Giveaway at Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church, 2915 Bohicket Road, Johns Island. During this festive event, volunteers distributed 600 lbs. of eggplant, 2,270 lbs. of cabbage, 600 lbs. of green peppers and 840 lbs. of cucumbers for a grand total of 4,310 lbs. of fresh produce. The recipients were sea island residents from 145 families comprised of 432 individuals, including 303 adults and 129 children.

The volunteers (26) who participated in the Giveaway came from the Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation (10), friends of Shirley Salvo, President, from PA (2), Sweetgrass Gardens Citadel Cadets (2), the Moultrie Boys (5), and Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church Food Pantry (6). Spirits were high, the weather fine, and everyone had a great time.

This event was one of a number organized by the Seabrook Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation. Two upcoming annual celebrations, The Gullah Gala, featuring Jonathan Green on May 5, at the Seabrook Island House, and The Gullah Celebration with Anne Caldwell and the Magnolia Singers on May 6, at Freshfields, comprise the Foundation’s primary fundraisers to support its programs: Backpack Buddies of Seabrook; Hebron Zion Presbyterian Emergency Food Bank; Holy Spirit Catholic Church Food Pantry; Meals on Wheels of Charleston; Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach Pantry; Rockville Presbyterian Meals on Monday; Sea Islands Blessing Basket; and the Sweetgrass Garden Co-Op.
