Beyond the Big House-Tour & Storytelling, 9/16

On September 16, 2017, the Historic Charleston Foundation in partnership with the Slave Dwelling Project will sponsor “Beyond the Big House-Tour and Storytelling.  This self-paced walking tour of back buildings and former work lots of Charleston’s private homes begins in the garden of the Nathaniel Russell House Mansion and highlights kitchens, carriage houses and slave dwellings that tell the stories of the lives and labor of the enslaved of Charleston.   The tour ends in the backyard of the Aiken-Rhett House Museum with interpreters and storytellers sharing the achievements and daily lives of African Americans in antebellum Charleston. Six buildings are included on the afternoon tour.  Learn how the structures have been re-used and preserved by present owners.
