John Gregg bought property on Seabrook Island in 1997 and moved here permanently in 2006. John has served two terms on Town Council, having been elected in 2013, then re-elected in 2015. He worked as an intellectual property lawyer before he retired and feels skills developed in his legal career have helped him contribute to the work of Town Council.
John feels the Town Council has been active in a number of ways to advance things in the community. In connection with his role as Public Safety official, he works with the Town’s Disaster Recovery Council and heads up the Town’s Public Safety Committee. The Disaster Recovery Council conducts “exercises” twice yearly based on a hurricane scenario to assist community organizations with improving their emergency response. Issues identified in those exercises inform the annual review and update the Town’s Comprehensive Emergency Plan undertaken by the Public Safety Committee. In addition, the Town’s experience in responding to hurricanes Matthew and Irma have resulted in greatly improved communication of emergency information to residents.
When asked about accomplishments, John noted that as part of recovery efforts from Matthew and Irma, he led preparation, submission, and follow through of the Town’s Requests for Public Assistance for state and federal disaster relief “grant” funding. To date the Town has received over $100,000 in state and federal funding in consequence of costs incurred from Hurricane Matthew.
