The State of South Carolina will conduct a statewide primary election on Tuesday, June 9, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As far as I can determine, the polls will be open from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. Poll workers will receive election training for the statewide primary, but this is yet to occur. Consequently, I do not know what policies and procedures the election commission will utilize to ensure that election materials are sanitized, social distancing is maintained, and that sufficient time is allocated to allow all voters to participate. The best thing that residents of the Seabrook precinct can do is to vote by absentee ballot. Voting by absentee ballot will eliminate any chance of COVID-19 infection – either for voters or poll workers. Registered voters can either call the Charleston County Election Commission at 843-744-8683 and request an absentee ballot over the phone or download and print an absentee ballot application at www.SCvotes.org. The deadline for applying for an absentee ballot is May 10; so please apply now and vote absentee for the statewide primary election.
