Road Projects on Johns Island

Here is an update on various road projects on Johns Island. All schedules and dates are agency projections and are likely to change.

  • Construction of the “northern pitchfork” (Maybank Highway and River Road) began in late January and is projected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.  See map below.

  • A “temporary” traffic light will be installed on Maybank Highway just north of River Road at the intersection with Fenwick Hall Allee by the end of March.  Fenwick Hall Allee is between the Stono Bridge and River Road.  The red dot on the map below shows the location of the traffic light.

The status of the Main Road Corridor project has not changed since the update provided on December 8, 2022.  Briefly:

  • Main Road Corridor Segment A:  This project extends from Bees Ferry Road to River Road and includes the Main Road/Route 17 intersection.  Construction is currently scheduled to begin in the fall of 2023 and would take about three years to complete.  Click here for a detailed map of the project.
  • Main Road Corridor Segment C (Bohicket Road):  Charleston County continues to assess and reduce the number of alternatives under consideration.  They expect to present the “preferred alternative” to the public in the 4th quarter of this year.  Construction could start in the fall of 2025 and could take three years to complete, depending on which alternative is selected.  Click here for the map that shows the overall plan.
