Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum

It’s a big year for Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum! 2023 marks the 80th anniversary of the USS Yorktown’s commissioning.

Nicknamed “The Fighting Lady” by her crew during World War II, the USS Yorktown was commissioned in Portsmouth, Virginia on April 15, 1943, officially making her a part of the fleet of the United States Navy.

In celebration of “The Fighting Lady’s” anniversary, a new temporary exhibit is open through July 16, 2023. The exhibit, entitled “All Who Served: The Uniforms of World War II,” will feature over 20 uniforms and other clothing articles representing each branch of the military.

The F/A-18A Hornet that sits on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown recently received a makeover to honor the Yorktown’s 80th anniversary. The F/A-18A has been refurbished to the vibrant blue and yellow of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels! To view a time lapse video of the refurbishment, click here.
