Back in person for another year, the Gibbes is excited to present a series of concerts in collaboration with Charleston Jazz.

The Abdiel Iriarte Experiment is a hard-driving trio that combines the sound of Afro-Venezuelan-Cuban rhythms with a taste of modern jazz. Originally from Valencia, Venezuela, Abdiel Iriarte now calls Charleston home. Through original compositions, pop/jazz standards, creative sound design with keyboards and various electronic instruments, this talented group promises to bring lots of ‘fire and passion’ to the Art of Jazz series!

Praise Songs for Dave the Potter:
Art and Poetry for David Drake

June 24, 2023 @ 10:30 am – Noon

David Drake is recognized as one of the most accomplished nineteenth-century potters in the United States. Even though his pots—many inscribed with original verse—sit in museums across the nation, he is too often passed over when considering the early foundations of African American poetry. Join us for a conversation about recent publication Praise Songs for Dave the Potter with editor and historian P. Gabrielle Foreman, artist Jonathan Green, and poet Glenis Redmond as they discuss how Drake’s pottery and poetry have inspired contemporary artists who claim him as an artistic ancestor.
