School Days, School Days

It’s back to school time and the first day of school is just around the corner on August 23. Even if we don’t have children of school age, most of us can remember the excitement and anticipation felt at the start of a new school year.

Time for a quiz. How much do you know about the governance of our local schools?

The Charleston County School District (CCSD) is the second-largest school system in South Carolina. It represents a unique blend of urban, suburban, and rural schools spanning 1,300 square miles of the Lowcountry serving approximately 50,000 students. Governance of CCSD is through the Board of Trustees who are non-partisan elected representatives from each of the County Board Districts. The CCSD Board of Trustees typically meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Click here for the meeting schedule for 2023-2024.

There are eight County Board Districts and Seabrook Island is in District 9, which encompasses Johns Island. Our elected representative on the CCSD Board of Trustees is Dr. Carol Tempel. To read Carol’s latest newsletter about the various issues facing the district, click here. Carol can be contacted at carol_tempel@charleston.k12.sc.us.

Because education plays such a critical role in our society, keeping abreast of issues is important whether we have children in school or not.
