Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island Annual Fundraiser

In Charleston County, 31.3% the people experience food insecurity, with many of them children. How does that happen in our land of plenty?

To help these food insecure children, school programs provide free breakfast and lunch, and in some cases, dinner as well, during the week. But what about the weekends?  That is where Backpack Buddies comes in.

We can’t do it without you—Backpack Buddies needs your help!

The Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island Annual Fundraising Campaign will run from August 4 to September 26, 2025. Once again, we are counting on the generosity and kindness of Seabrook Island residents, visitors, and guests to help raise $80,000. Donating is easy by using the Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island website. Donations can be made online via PayPal, credit card, or check.

Any amount is greatly appreciated, and just $250 will cover the costs for one child for the entire year. You can also join many fellow Seabrookers in supporting Backpack Buddies by becoming a “Friend of Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island” with a donation of $1,000 or more.

This school year, Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island will provide about 16,000 bags of food for children to have something nutritious to eat over the weekend.  School starts on August 12, and after students are identified and parental permission is obtained, the first food delivery will take place on September 11, 2025.

Founded in May 2014, our all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizes a weekly operation at the Oyster Catcher Community Center. Volunteers shop for food, set up packing stations, assemble 13-item food bags, and deliver them to schools. This year, Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island will provide more than 420 bags of food weekly for children at Angel Oak Elementary School, the new Johns Island Elementary School, and Lambs Elementary School.
