Becoming Harriet Tubman

Natalie Daise, former host of Nick Jr.’s Gullah Gullah Island, an award-winning artist, and storyteller presents Becoming Harriet Tubman, a one-person, five-character show that shares the story of Ariminta Ross’s evolution into Harriet Tubman. Engrossing narrative and original and traditional music trace her transition.
When the show debuted at Charleston, SC’s Piccolo Spoleto in 2012, it received an A+ rating with the Charleston City Paper saying, “Natalie is a masterful storyteller.”

Picturing Resistance: The Evolving Imagery of Harriet Tubman

How can art shape the face of a resistance? And what separates the mythology of a movement from the individuals who lived it? Inspired by the exhibition Picturing Freedom, this discussion will focus on the evolution of the imagery used to describe Harriet Tubman and how her legacy can help shape our future. Join artist Terry Plater and scholar Janell Hobbs in conversation about how artistic imagination can connect us to history, memory, and progress.

Rag Quilting with Cookie Washington

Cookie Washington will lead a five-day workshop exploring ancestral weaving and sustaining creativity. Using her own rich family lineage and the creative work of generations of women who came before, Cookie will guide participants through a regenerative process of breathing new life into discarded textiles while reducing our environmental impact.

Silverpoint Drawing Workshop
Saturday, September 20 | 10:30 am –12:30 pm
Learn the history, materials, and techniques behind this ancient method of drawing in this one-day workshop with local artist, Katelyn Chapman. Students will learn how to create their own drawing styluses with sterling silver, prepare drawing surfaces with both traditional and contemporary grounds, explore tinting techniques, and learn the fundamentals of line drawing as it pertains to silverpoint. While previous drawing experience is welcomed, it is not required.
