Sea Islands Action Network (SIAN) and Kiawah for Democracy (K4D) invite you to come learn about Charleston City Council and how this local governing body affects all our lives here in the sea islands. This is a non-partisan event that is free and open to all.
- Date: Wednesday, October 15, 2025
- Time: 4:00 – 6:00 pm
- Place: Oyster Catcher Community Center
Charleston City Council is a nonpartisan body with new representatives for Districts 2, 4, 6, 10, and 12 being elected next month for four year terms. Our guests are two experts, Leslie Skardon and Aaron Polkey, each running in different districts in the upcoming November 4, 2025, City Council elections. Leslie is a candidate in D12 James Island and Aaron in D4 Charleston Peninsula.
While those who live on Seabrook and Kiawah are not able to vote in City Council races, decisions made by the Charleston City Council clearly impact all who live in the county. This race matters for anyone who regularly visits (or drives through) downtown, West Ashley, James Island, or Johns Island. Charleston traffic, flooding, and development affect all of us, and we need more effective leadership to make progress on these issues.
Local elections are the foundation of our democracy and being well-informed about the issues makes us better participants in our democracy. Come voice your concerns and find out how you can support good leadership.
Leslie serves on several commissions and is the CEO of an environmental sustainability organization that connects diverse stakeholders from across the state in search of solutions that benefit our communities and businesses. Aaron is an attorney and non-profit executive focused on sustainable solutions to preserve safe and affordable housing, mitigate violence, and extend opportunities to young people.
This is a non-partisan event that’s free and open to all! Please come and find a friend to join you. RSVP in advance to save your seat and get your name on the gate pass list if needed.
