A Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, is an organized group of volunteers trained in a consistent, nationwide approach to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. CERT volunteers support emergency responders with disaster preparedness and protecting family, neighbors, and others in a disaster or an emergency situation.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) made the CERT training available nationally in 1993. Now communities in all 50 states, including many tribal nations and U.S. territories, conduct CERT training for teens and adults for all kinds of hazards.
Seabrook Island CERT is looking for volunteers of all ages and abilities. We will train you to FEMA standards in fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. The time commitment involves the initial training then one hour every other month plus volunteer activities.
