In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday to take place annually on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. This year Memorial Day is May 25. Memorial Day weekend also serves as the unofficial kickoff to summer and the launch of the Charleston’s world-renowned performing arts season.
Charleston will host several Memorial Day tributes and services:
- Charleston Concert Band Annual Concert: 3:00 pm on Monday, May 25, at Hampton Park. This free, city-sponsored outdoor tradition features stirring patriotic marches and musical tributes to each military branch as part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival Traditions.
- Charleston Men’s Chorus Tribute: 12:00 pm on Monday, May 25, at the historic St. Philip’s Church. Tickets can be purchased directly through the Charleston Men’s Chorus for this powerful program of anthems and spirituals.
- Taps Across America: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday, May 25, at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. Visitors can participate in a national moment of remembrance at 3:00 pm with a live performance of Taps on the harbor.
- Field of Honor: Located at Marion Square throughout the weekend. You can dedicate a flag to honor fallen heroes, with all proceeds directly supporting local veterans in crisis.
