Gwen Emery brings a distinctive blend of science and creativity to her dual pursuits as a family physician and accomplished acrylic artist. Encouraged from an early age by her Dutch parents—both raised in deeply artistic households—Gwen has long nurtured a love for art alongside her medical career.

About eight years ago, she discovered the world of Dutch pouring artists online, igniting a passion that has since become central to her artistic expression. Her work focuses on acrylic pouring, a technique often described as “pour and flow,” in which paints are combined with various mediums to create dynamic movement and striking visual effects. Rather than relying on traditional brushwork, Gwen allows the paint to move freely across the canvas, resulting in vibrant, organic compositions rich in energy and depth. Her artistic journey has been further shaped by the influence and instruction of renowned European pouring artists Rinske Douna and Olga Soby, whose guidance has helped refine her technique and expand her creative vision.

Gwen’s connection to the Lowcountry is longstanding. After vacationing on Kiawah Island for 37 years, she and her husband, Sandy, made it their permanent home. Now settled in their “forever home,” they enjoy an active lifestyle filled with tennis, golf, and pickleball.
As Artist of the Month, Gwen presents a collection that celebrates both the diversity of acrylic pouring techniques and her signature use of bold, joyful color. Her work invites viewers to experience the beauty of movement, spontaneity, and vibrant expression.

Join us in celebrating Gwen’s artistic journey at her Artist of the Month reception on Wednesday, July 8, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm at the Seabrook Island Lake House. Come experience the joy, creativity and truly unique artistic expressions of Gwen.
