The turn of the twentieth century heralded a period of seismic change in the art world. Whereas Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists of the previous generation paved the way for a new form of modern art that broke free from academic conventions, the new avant garde, including household names like Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp, and Dalí, barreled into the new century with a determination to free themselves of all conventions of art throughout time.
This lecture series will explore the major modern art movements and artists (1890s -1920s) who came to define — and re-define — what it means to make art and what we call art to this day. From tracing the underpinnings of Cubism and Fauvism in the art of Cézanne to challenging aesthetic and visual reality through the rise of Futurism, Dada, and Surrealism, this interactive four-week lecture series will feature the greatest hits (and should-be-greatest hits) of modern art — and transform the way one sees art history forever.
