
Seabrook Island is surrounded by beautiful marshes. Beyond their natural beauty, do you know the intricate role these wetlands play in sustaining the island’s diverse wildlife and habitats while also protecting our natural environment?
Seabrook’s marshes are tidal, meaning they flood and drain with the shifting tides. These areas are often inundated with saltwater and support a complex ecosystem.
According to Seabrook Island’s 2025 Guide to Marshes, Seabrook Island is home to approximately 2,000 acres of saltwater marsh, tidal creeks, and marsh islands. These marshlands are an essential part of the island’s natural environment, providing critical habitat for wildlife while helping to absorb floodwaters, reduce erosion, and filter pollutants. At the same time, Seabrook Island’s marshes face increasing pressures from rising sea levels, development, erosion, and other changes to the coastal environment.

Seabrook Island’s Unique Role
As a barrier island shaped by wind, waves, and tides, Seabrook Island is low-lying and highly influenced by its surrounding coastal waters. Its marshes are, therefore, an important component of the island’s natural resilience. By absorbing floodwaters, reducing wave energy, stabilizing shorelines, and filtering pollutants, the marsh system helps protect the island’s homes, roads, and other infrastructure from the effects of coastal flooding and storms.
The regular flooding and draining of Seabrook’s tidal marshes creates a highly productive environment. Salt marshes serve as nurseries for fish and shellfish, feeding and nesting grounds for birds, and habitat for a diverse array of plants and animals. At the same time, marsh vegetation helps stabilize sediment, limit erosion, absorb and slow stormwater, and improve water quality.

Because the marsh is a dynamic system, its ability to provide these benefits depends on maintaining healthy tidal flows, functioning vegetation communities, and sufficient space for the marsh to respond to changing water levels. Rising sea levels and other pressures make thoughtful, long-term stewardship increasingly important. As coastal conditions continue to change, protecting and thoughtfully managing these marshes will be essential to maintaining the health, beauty, and resilience of Seabrook Island for future generations.
Recognizing the importance of this resource, the Town of Seabrook created a Marshfront Management Plan (MMP) in 2025 to guide the protection and management of Seabrook Island’s marshfront. Recently, the Seabrook Island Property Owner’s Association’s (SIPOA) Environmental Committee received approval to build a living shoreline system to promote oyster growth and vegetation along the marsh banks.

Seabrook Island’s marshlands are among its most valuable natural resources. Their ecological complexity and functions provide benefits that extend beyond the marsh itself, supporting wildlife, protecting shorelines, improving water quality, and helping the island withstand flooding and storms. As coastal conditions change, protecting and managing these marshes will be essential for maintaining the health, beauty, and resilience of Seabrook Island for future generations.
