A retired photojournalist for the Associated Press, Getty Images, and The Baltimore Sun, J Pat Carter is a three-time Pulitzer nominee and Eisenstadt Award winner. His career spans the spectrum of human experience, from covering major national news stories. These stories include running into the Oklahoma City bombing site as others were running out, riding out a tornado under a bridge while protecting a mother and her children, and his current work in conceptual portraiture and freelance photography for organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center and AARP. He is not short on powerful images and poignant stories.
The presentation will be focused on Documenting the Indigenous Experience. Now a docent at the First Americans Museum, Carter focuses on “environmental work stories” with deep historical roots. His presentation will trace the near-extinction of the American bison, from 40 million down to fewer than 500, along with their surprising 1907 recovery in the Wichita Mountains via the New York City Zoo. He will also share insights from his documentary work on the Navajo reservation’s uranium miners, the health crises of the Pima Indians, and the Missing Murdered Indigenous Women movement, concluding with a gallery of traditional ceremonies and celebrations.
Carter should keep us riveted with his images and the stories wrapped around them. This presentation will appeal to photographers of all skill levels. Please join us on September 17.
