In her own words…
I believe I was destined to do something with photography since I grew up with a dad who never went anywhere without his camera. I loved poring over family picture albums, photo books, and even my grandmother’s photo album from the roaring 20’s.
I had a Brownie camera in elementary school and finally took my first photo class while in college. I was purchasing film 50’ at a time and found the darkroom amazing. To this day I still have my Canon A1. I only played around with my camera after college until I had new and consistent subjects which were our children. Their lives are well documented. During those years I evolved through numerous digital Canon cameras and am now in the mirrorless world.
It wasn’t until the kids were well into various activities that I realized how much I enjoyed being on the sidelines of various High School and youth athletics. It grew into working with schools, booster clubs, and parents of various athletes and sports. I later dabbled in dance and Equestrian events. In between seasons I expanded into family portraits, which extended into preschools and school fundraisers doing mini sessions. This was all done mostly in natural light. I experimented with other forms of photography during that time but never concentrated on one. My first taste of incredible wildlife photography was on a trip to Tanzania, followed by a second trip to other areas of Africa.
We moved to Seabrook in Nov ‘23 and I was immediately impressed by all the bird and wildlife postings. I have never seen so many sunsets and sunrise images. We live in a beautiful spot.
I’m not a birder nor do in consider myself a landscape photographer but do enjoy being challenged with various photography techniques such as ICM (intentional camera movement), macro and Lens Baby to name a few. I’m up for trying just about any technique, but do not want to be tied to post processing.
Being part of the Seabrook Island Photography Club has expanded my awareness of trying different methods which I have greatly appreciated and it’s amazing being surrounded by so many creative and talented people. I’ve learned a lot from this group.
Jan’s photographs will be featured on the Photo Club Wall at the Seabrook Island Lake House beginning in early October. All are welcome at a reception on October 14 from 4:30 to 6:00 pm.
