Reverend John Reynolds is a distinguished Civil Rights Activist, ordained American Baptist minister, and author whose firsthand experiences bring the history of the Civil Rights Movement vividly to life. At just 18 years old, Reverend Reynolds joined the Movement in 1965, volunteering for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s (SCLC) Summer Community Organization and Political Education (SCOPE) Project, where he trained at the historic Penn Center. As a teenager, he was hired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to serve on the field staff of the SCLC.
Throughout the Movement, Reverend Reynolds participated in voter registration drives, boycotts, and marches across Alabama—including Selma and Troy—as well as in Birmingham, Chicago, and Louisville, where he took part in open housing protests. In 1968, he helped coordinate the New England portion of the Poor People’s Campaign and later served as the Health and Sanitation Director for Resurrection City, the historic encampment in Washington, D.C.
Through powerful firsthand stories of courage, sacrifice, perseverance, and hope, Reverend Reynolds offers a deeply personal perspective on the struggle for freedom, equality, desegregation, and the right to vote. His stories will move you, inspire you, and illuminate the extraordinary power of ordinary people who stood together and fought for change.
