SIAG November Demo and Workshop with Stephen Cefalo

Always wanted to do a portrait of your grandkids? Or have, but met a few snags in the process? Or maybe you’ve just avoided people in your paintings altogether? Help is here, as Stephen Cefalo shares the principles, tips and techniques he’s mastered in his decades of teaching and painting people. For two days you’ll explore the magic of rendering heads and figures, learning technical skills, to observe well, and how to achieve a likeness. Steve will show you it’s easier than you think!

Free Artist Demonstration:

All levels, including beginners;

Two-day Workshop:
November 3 and 4
9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Oyster Catcher Community Center
Cost: $200
Model fee of $30-$40 collected at workshop

Day one is devoted to the face; the second day, the figure. If you’re a beginner, you’ll start with such basics as building from foundation shapes, measuring and proportion, and thinking in terms of geometric planes for depth and volume. If you’re more experienced, Steve will zero in with you to refine specific skills. Working from a model, Steve demonstrates with oils, but will be sharing principles that can be easily translated into the medium of your choice.

Steve studied at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, and counts masters such as Steven Assael, Max Ginsburg, and Nelson Shanks as his teachers. He has worked as a portrait painter, mural artist, scenic artist and set painter, and a columnist for major art magazines. He assisted pop artist Jeff Koons on a series of large-scale oil paintings for the Guggenheim Museum in Berlin and worked as In-house illustrator for Nickelodeon. And for many years he taught painting and figure drawing as full-time faculty at various universities and art schools.

You’ll find Steve’s paintings in galleries and collections internationally. One reviewer called his work “a fantastic mixture of personal and universal narrative that pays homage to the drama and craft of the old masters yet still feels contemporary. Technically, his years of studying anatomy is revealed in beautifully rendered figures in wonderfully natural poses.” He recently opened Cefalo Gallery and Atelier in West Ashley, where he shows his artwork and teaches. His website is: stephencefalo.com.
