Event Details

Date:   Tuesday, October 14, 2025
Time:   6:00 pm
Place:  Seabrook Island Club
Meal:   Three course dinner
Cost:   $48 (includes tax and tip)

This event is open to everyone. The Lost Voice chronicles Greta’s journey after a rare neurological disorder took away her singing voice, the very gift that defined her. In this deeply personal memoir and during her presentation, Greta invites us into her struggle to deal with universally human issues: What does “voice” mean to us, beyond the literal sense? How do we cope when a core part of our identity is stripped away? In what ways can creativity help us heal from loss?

Part meditation on creativity, part story of recovery, The Lost Voice explores how losing what you love most can open the door to new forms of strength, expression, and purpose. Join us to hear Greta reflect on her journey as an author. Toward the end of the program, there will be time to pose questions.

Seats are limited, so don’t miss this opportunity to engage in what promises to be a thought-provoking and inspiring conversation.

Giving Back: Blessing Basket Named Fleming Open Charity

The 41st Annual Fleming Open at Seabrook Island, set for October 1–5 , 2025, will once again bring top level tennis to the Lowcountry while giving back to the community in a meaningful way. The Fleming Open has selected Blessing Basket—an outreach program of the Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation—as this year’s charitable beneficiary. Each month, the program provides groceries for nearly 700 individuals in 300 Johns and Wadmalaw Island households, many of them senior citizens on fixed incomes facing food insecurity.

With the help of 150 volunteers, about 80 of whom gather monthly to sort, pack, and distribute food, Blessing Basket delivers fresh produce, dairy, meats, eggs, bread, and pantry staples that supply up to 30 meals per household. Operating with 97 percent of donations going directly to serving local residents, the program exemplifies efficient and effective utilization of donor support.

“By partnering with Blessing Basket, the Fleming Open continues its tradition of blending tennis competition with community service.”Committee Chairman Mary Anne Rayfield

Please consider helping our neighbors in need. More information on the tournament details can be found at flemingopen.net, and to donate to Blessing Basket, click here

Happy Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Monday, September 22 and is a festive time welcoming the Jewish New Year. This holiday starts the High Holy Days and culminates with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. This year, Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Wednesday, October 1. Rosh Hashanah is filled with special foods, rituals and traditions.

One of the most important rituals is the sounding of the Shofar, (a hollowed-out ram’s horn), to welcome the New Year. It is traditional to eat apples dipped in honey signifying hope for a sweet year. During the year, on Shabbat and festive occasions, Jewish people eat loaves of traditional braided bread known as Challah. On Rosh Hashanah, the Challah is baked in a round shape to symbolize the cyclical nature of life. Raisins are added to the dough for extra sweetness.

Another Rosh Hashanah ritual is known as Tashlich (“casting off”), in which pieces of bread are thrown into water while prayers are recited. As the bread, symbolizing the sins of the past year is swept away, those who embrace this tradition are spiritually cleansed and renewed.

On Rosh Hashanah, Jews everywhere greet each other with the Hebrew phrase “L’Shana Tovah,” which translates to “for a good year.”

May you have a sweet year ahead!
