Respite Care Golf Tournament on Seabrook April 4th

RCC gold 2015Respite Care Charleston announces the 12th Annual Betty Cannon Golf Tournament at Seabrook Island on April 4th. This annual tournament is named in honor of Mrs. Betty Cannon, a long time participant in the Respite Care program, and held as an annual fund raising event.

Golfer and sponsorship slots are still available for this enjoyable tournament at Seabrook Island Crooked Oaks golf course. After golfing for the day enjoying the ocean views, sit back and relax with other tournament players and guests with a casual dinner. Golfers, teams and sponsors can register by contacting Program Coordinator, Jennifer Hartig at 843-408-5243 or email at Jennifer@respitecarecharleston.org.

Tournament Schedule of events: Registration begins at 11am followed by a putting contest at 12:00 pm. Shotgun start begins at 1:00 pm with a reception and awards following completion of play (around 5:30pm). This event is rain or shine.

Respite Care Charleston is a non-profit organization that strives to improve the quality of life for individuals and families coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Respite Care Charleston provides social day programs and caregiver support groups for individuals and families. Participants in respite programs enjoy memory stimulating socialization, art therapy, music therapy and gentle exercise. Family caregivers can benefit from a much-needed break by taking their loved ones for the activity filled day programs. Programs are available each day of the week at locations on Johns Island, James Island, North Charleston, West Ashley and Mt. Pleasant. Every spring, the City of Charleston and Daniel Island serve as a backdrop to the largest women’s only tennis tournament in the world.

As one of the hottest tickets in professional sports, the Volvo Car Open (formerly known as the Family Circle Cup) is more than just a tennis tournament, it’s a festival with some world-class tennis thrown in. During the week, fans are entertained with a variety of activities aimed at making their week on Daniel Island a memorable one.

Seabrook Island Tennis Fundraiser for BIFMC

Wednesday, March 9th, the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic benefitted from the generosity of our Seabrook Island Tennis Club members. Over forty-five men and women participated in this tennis event to raise funds for our non-profit medical home so our uninsured neighbors on Johns, Wadmalaw and James Island can continue to obtain healthcare services, at no cost.

BIFMC Board member, Vasco Pickett, and Clinical Charge Nurse, Wanda Weart, shared the BIFMC’s impact on our local communities and stories of patients who have benefitted from the efforts of the 50+ volunteer physicians, nurses and support staff at the clinic with the tennis players. More than half of the volunteers at our medical facility reside on Seabrook Island.

Everyone who participated enjoyed a beautiful day on the courts and a wonderful wine and cheese gathering rounding out the venue. Thanks to the Seabrook Island Tennis Club, our “Miracle on Maybank” clinic can continue to keep islanders healthy and productive.

Seabrook Island Veterans Day Charitable Golf Event Rescheduled – November 16th

Seabrook Island Veterans Day Charitable Golf Event Rescheduled

The Veterans Day Charitable Golf Event originally scheduled for 11/9 has been rescheduled for Monday 11/16. The event honors veterans who have served the country and raises money to support the Wounded Warrior Project and the Ralph Johnson Veterans Hospital. If you had not originally registered to play but would now like to participate, please call the golf shop at 843‐768‐2529.

The event will be a captain’s choice scramble format beginning with a 9:30 A.M. shotgun start. Teams will be flighted for awards based on total team handicap. There will be pizza and drinks in the club house after play is completed. All Lowcountry residents are invited to participate. Individual registrations are welcomed.

The entry fee for Seabrook Island Club members is $70 plus cart fee. For non‐club members the fee is $120. $50 of the entry fee will be set aside as a charitable contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project and the Ralph Johnson Veterans Hospital. Seabrook Island Club Phone System

The Seabrook Island Club has reported that their phone system is temporarily out of service for Club Administration, Equestrian, Food and Beverage
and Golf operations.

They have requested that if you need to contact the Golf Shop today, please call 843.469.4696.

They will be sending out an email when it gets back in service.

Fun at the Fleming Tennis Tournament

Seabrook Island is proud to host the Fleming Tournament.  Besides being a prestigious tournament, it is great fun.  We have interviewed a few people to give you the flavor of this weekend which you can view in the video link at the bottom of the page.

The first to wander by were Lisa Van Arnam and Pam Muncy, two fun-loving competitors.   Then Steve Duffell who has a long history of involvement with the USTA tennis association said hello.  Susan Meloy, Chairman of the Tournament, gave us an idea of  the effort it takes to put on this Tournament.   And finally, Warren Kimball, a Seabrook participant, but more importantly one who has been participating since the beginning, gave us the history of the Tournament.

Players may register as teams or individually and the golf shop will form teams for individual registrants.

All Low Country residents are invited to participate. The entry fee for club members is $70 plus cart and $120 for non-members. $50 of the entry fee will be set aside as a charitable contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project and the Ralph Johnson Veterans Hospital.

Town is the Presenter Sponsor of the Alan Fleming Tournament

Town of Seabrook banner - reducedThe Town of Seabrook Island is proud to announce that it is the Presenter Sponsor of the Alan Fleming Senior Open Clay Court State Championship that will be held here on the Island in October.A comprehensive and persuasive presentation by the Fleming Committee was made to the Council describing the importance of the Tournament and the positive economic impact it would have on the Seabrook Island.  Council was told that 2015 marks the 34th year of the tournament that has grown into one of the most popular events on the southern senior tournament schedule.  Of particular relevance to Seabrook Island, it was added, is that this is a senior championship for people ranging in age from 35 to 80 years old, all prime tourism candidates for Seabrook Island.

The benefits to the Town of Seabrook Island were supported by an Estimated Economic Impact Study prepared by Charleston Area Sports Commission, part of the Charleston Visitors Bureau.   Based on data from the 2014 tournament, the study concluded that last year the tournament generated $330,000 of commercial revenue, the majority of which was spent locally.  This did not include a real estate sale to one of the competitors.

The request to the Council was that the Town be a Presenter Sponsor, contributing $5,000.  This would sponsor the welcoming cocktail party on Thursday and the dinner on Friday night.  After discussion, the motion was approved by unanimous vote of the Council.

In consideration for the sponsorship, the Fleming Committee would list the Town on the Sponsor banner at the Racquet Club for a full year.  During the Tournament, three Town banners will be prominently displayed.  In addition, the Town’s sponsorship will be referenced in all of the Tournament’s printed material.  Council members were invited to the cocktail party and the dinner.

Alan Fleming Welcome Party on Thursday, October 8th

Seabrookers are now welcome to join the players and organizers of the 2015 Alan Fleming Fleming LogoTennis Tournament at the Welcome Party to be held on Thursday, October 8th. The Welcome Party officially opens the Alan Fleming Tournament scheduled for October 7th – 11th at our own Seabrook Island Racquet Club. Limited tickets are available so please reserve your place early.

The party’s theme will celebrate the Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments of Professional tennis.
Your $35 entry ticket will insure you get great food, your choice of beer and wine, opportunities to purchase raffle tickets for great prizes to benefit Respite Care Charleston, and to socialize with the amateur players attending this year’s event. The Welcome Party will be held in the Atlantic Room of the Seabrook Island Club starting at 6:30 pm.

Please call the Racquet Club at 768-7543 to sign up. The Welcome party is open to all Seabrookers on a “First Come, First Served” basis. Non- tournament players may place their name on a “space available “list prior to September 21st and will be contacted after that date with their confirmation.
