Yeah – 6 nests this week! We are on a roll…
Monday, June 20 – Another good morning on the beach with multiple calls.
Zone 4 called first with a crawl just north of Boardwalk 1. Jennifer Gibson responded but unfortunately it was a false crawl. Nest 22 was possibly washed over and tomorrow’s walkers should bring a trowel to add some more sand. Nest 3 had a crab hole and the pegs need to be pounded down a little.
Zone 3 called and called again. Mike Vinson, Gary Holtz and his grandson, Clay, Sue Thomas, Rob Jerome, and Catherine Scully called first with a crawl in front of the house with two chimneys. Bill and Linda Nelson responded and found Nest 27. With the help of Linda Nelson, Veronica L’Allier, Ginger Seabrook and Rob Jerome, the 149 eggs were moved to their new nest behind the Nelson’s house. Their second crawl was at Boardwalk 4. Bill Nelson responded and was met by Jennifer Gibson. Bill found Nest 28 with Rob digging to find the eggs. Jennifer walked the equipment in from her truck and with the help of Sue and Rob were able to leave the nest in situ.
Zone 2 called with a complex crawl just behind the Nelson’s house. Veronica L’Allier, Kathy Murray and Ginger Seabrook found the crawl with Bill and Linda making the “long” commute to check it out. The mama meandered over 50 yards of weeds and dunes. Multiple potential body pits were probed but unfortunately, it was a false crawl.
Zone 1’s only activity was unfortunately filling in a crab hole on nest 10 which may have included a small shell piece brought to the top by the crab.
Tuesday, June 21 – The phone started to ring early but in the end we had two false crawls, an in and out on zone 4 and the best chance for a nest on zone 3 at the vehicle entrance. Judy Morr and Linda Nelson probed and dug and checked but there was no thrown sand, no body pit and, alas, no nest.
No activity on zones 1 and 2.
Better chance tomorrow?
Wednesday, June 22 – We have nest # 29! 🐢👏 It is on zone 3, Crawl was found by
Jo & Jim Eisenhauer, Judy Morr, Richard Glasgow and Isabel Romero near the vehicle entrance. The 117 eggs were moved to the area near nest # 5 where Terry, Gary and Sandy had placed a blue flag on Monday.
Zone 4 had no activity
Zone 2 had an in and out at the rocks
Zone 1 nest # 10 has a crab hole which Lucy and Ray Hoover filled with sand.
Yesterday’s report should have had 2 in and out crawls on zone 4 and the 1 crawl on zone 3.
Nice to get another nest.
2 nests would be great tomorrow.
Thursday, June 23 – All zones reported in with no new crawls.
Hopefully the ladies will start the weekend off early tonight with nests in every zone..
As noted turtle nest prober and all around beach aficionado Tim Morawski said, “Don’t these mamas know we won an award for best refurbished beach?
Friday, June 24 – It was a day for the low number zones.
On zone #1, Sara Klauber texted with a crawl between the end of Pelican watch and the first camp access. Another false crawl was reported at the first camp access. Bill Greubel responded but, unfortunately, both were false crawls.
Zone #2 walkers Anne Hess, Pat Backstrom, Judy Morr along with Anne’s daughter 
Jody, Granddaughter Ryan and Grandson Louden had a crawl at the first house past the club. Judy acted as first responder and probed the entire body pit with no luck but master prober Bill Greubel returned from Zone 1 and found the nest tucked under the rack near the rocks. The 104 eggs from Nest 30 were moved up beach about 200 yards. Ryan helped put the eggs in the bucket with Anne and Jody gently laying them happily into their new home. Louden helped pound the stakes in to the screen.
There was no activity on zones 3 and 4.
Saturday, June 25 We had a false crawl at the very end of Zone 4 at the new cut. A small mama turtle came in and dug 4 body pits. None of them were smoothed over, just empty holes with no eggs. The sand is very hard in that area. Lisa Hellman and Kathy Maher had a long walk there and all the excitemet to end up with nothing. The mama turtle must have felt the same way. There was a long crawl over on the Kiawah side at the same place. The same mom?
The other Zones reported nothing.
These false crawls are too much.
Sunday, June 26 – Zone 4 walkers, Jane Magioncalda and Joe Ficarra, in their green shirts for luck, and Joshua & Amanda Shilko started walking early and found a crawl and body pit at the second dog sign. Jen Gibson came out and found the eggs for nest # 31. They moved the nest back further in the same area. The green shirts worked!
Karen Sewell from Zone 2 called with a in and out at the Beach Club Villas.
Jan McBride of Zone 1 called with 2 crawls, one at the evergreens near the old pier and the other at the last bend to the creek. Terry Fansler and Sandy MacCoss responded. The first crawl was an in and out and could have been the same mama as the last crawl which was like the crawl yesterday in zone 4, Same size and 4 body pits still open. What a bummer.
Then Karen Sewell called again with 2 crawls. The first at the yellow house, Nest #32 was found by Mark Doane , prober in training. It was moved back. Then the troops went to the next crawl where Jen Gibson found the eggs of nest #33.
Zone 3 had no activity.
Now that is a wonderful day, 3 nests. You have to love it!🐢🐢🐢☺
