This week we are starting the summary with an interesting graph comparing the number of nests found each year since 2010. This year is on track to be a great year!

Monday, June 27 – Another busy morning on the beach resulted in 2 nests. Zone 1: Kathy and Ron Chamberlain called with a possible crawl by the life guard stand and another between the vehicle entrance and the old pier. Jennifer Gibson responded, but alas, they were both false crawls.
Zone 2 had 3 crawls this morning, 2 proving to be false and one with 54 eggs. Bob
Mason, Kathy Murray and Veronica L’Allier found the crawls on zone 2. Bill and Linda Nelson and Jim Lawrence responded to locate the nest. Bill and Jim probed and Jim dug to find the 54 eggs 500 ft north of Boardwalk 7 at the Club pool area. Jim proceeded to remove the eggs from their initial exposed nest, dug a new nest 100 ft up the beach and on top of the high dunes and placed the fresh eggs in the new location. One of the false crawls was just up the beach from the pool area and up against the rocks. The other was half way up the beach toward Boardwalk #6. Both were thoroughly probed with lots of hand digging, probably around crab holes, by Bob Mason and Jim Lawrence without finding any eggs.
Zone 3: Mike Vinson, Gary Holtz, his grandson, Clay, Sue Thomas, Rob Jerome,
and Catherine Scully found a crawl 50 yards south of Boardwalk 4. Jennifer Gibson responded and found Nest 34. The 118 eggs were moved by the crew to 50 yards south of boardwalk 5.
Zone 4: All was quiet on Zone 4.
Tuesday, June 28 – The calls started early this morning at 6:25AM
and kept coming in until 10. Linda Nelson was first with a crawl at boardwalk # 6 in zone 3. Linda found nest #37 which was left in situ.
Judy Morr went to zone 2 where Judy Clifford and Jane Magioncalda had a crawl in front of the house next to the yellow house. Judy found nest # 36 with 81 eggs.
Tim Morawski went to zone 4 where there were 2 crawls. One was at the second dog sign and the other was around the bend at the new cut. Walkers Lynda Zegers Lori Porwall, Ruby Jenkins, Pam Salvastrini, Francie Segal thought the new cut crawl was the best chance of a nest but it turned out to be a false crawl. The other crawl had 2 body pits. One being just a hole, but the second was nest #38 with 104 eggs. Is this the mom who had been leaving us all the open holes and she finally gave us a nest? I hope so.
Poor zone 1 had no activity..
Another 3 nest day🙌🐢. May we have many more.
Wednesday, June 29 – We have nest # 39 found by zone 3 walkers, Judy Morr, Jim and Jo Eisenhauer Richard Glasgow and Isabel Romero near the vehicle entrance. Sandy MacCoss, Terry Fansler and Tim Morawski probed. Tim Morawski found the 72 eggs which were moved to a safer location just south of boardwalk #4.
Zone 1 had a false crawl 50 yards after they got off boardwalk #9 and a large piece of wood with lights on it at the second trash can.
Zone 2 had no activity but the many nests on that zone are happily sleeping.
Zone 4 had two false crawls, one in the middle of the zone and the last one by the new cut next to yesterday’s false crawl.
Thursday, June 30 – June ended with a flourish! Two more nests.
The first call this morning came from Zone 4 with a tent structure left on the beach all night. It must be Fourth of July weekend!
Karen Preston, Mimi Montague and Pixie Hider called with a crawl around the bend. Then they called with another crawl even further down. The first crawl found became Nest 40 with 132 eggs. It was moved to Zone 3, 20 yards south of boardwalk #4. The second crawl had a couple of body pits but no nest.
Zone 1 also had a nest. Anne Snelgrove, Gayle Evans and Melanie
Jerome found a crawl about 150 yards past the last trash can. Judy Morr responded and found nest 41. The mama laid it in an area of dense vegetation so the 118 eggs were moved to the area near the last trash can.
Zone 2 welcomed two new Junior Turtle Patrol Members, Leila and Noah Geller-Pawlak, ages 7 and 8.
Friday – July 1 – Zone 4 started the morning with a crawl just as they got off Boardwalk 1. Sandy MacCoss, Alison Bowers, Tory Kindley and Pat and Bob Derajtys started their long walk with the storm still rumbling nearby. Bill Greubel responded and found Nest 42. 132 eggs were moved near Boardwalk 4 in Zone 3.
Meanwhile the walkers in other zones waited a little later to allow
the storm to pass. Zone 2 had a lot of sand toys which were left high on the beach for the children to enjoy again today.
Zone 3 reported their excitement was watching the Zone 4
relocation and rescuing a horseshoe crab (We don’t just protect turtles.)
The Friday walkers with Bill Greubel as their fearless First Responder had previously experienced busy mornings after storms but today, they
were only blessed with one nest. Maybe the mamas are waiting for the fireworks displays.
Saturday, July 2 – We have nest #43,
Arline DeGennaro found the crawl which was in zone 3 but the nest was on zone 2 and we moved it to zone 2 100 yards south of the yellow house.Bill Greubel & Sandy MacCoss moved the nest and Betsy Quinn dug the new nest (her first time). Betsy, Sandy and Terry Fansler put the eggs in the new nest so it was a joint effort by zone 2 and 3 walkers and the first responders. All the other walkers and responders had a great time watching and talking- turtles of course.
The other zones had nothing to report.
Sunday, July 3 – Zone 1 reported crab holes
Zone 3 reported all the nests were safe
The best news was from Zone 2 with possible activity on nest # 2.
Have a great 4th and look for the turtle vehicles in the parade.
Have fun out there.
