Alice Ravenel Huger Smith: Sharing Her Legacy
A special exhibit of her landscapes, family portraits and sketch books from private family collections never before exhibited together. Alice Ravenel Huger Smith was an author, illustrator, printmaker, painter, teacher and historian. She was a key member of a group of local writers and artists that spearheaded a dramatic cultural renewal in the 1920’s and 1930’s, now recognized as the Charleston Renaissance. She is best known for her paintings that depict the natural beauty and historical significance of the Carolina Low Country. She was also part of a close and devoted family.
This special exhibit, displayed at the Edmondston-Alston House Museum and the Middleton Place House Museum, brings together, for the first time, private family collections of her art and poetry, and provides a unique perspective on her life and work.
