Dragon Boat Charleston Wins Gold in Beaufort

The theme of the 2017 DragonBoat Beaufort was Community – Competition – Compassion. All three traits were on display by the DragonBoat Charleston team that won gold medals for their first place finish in the cancer survivor division on June 24. Seabrookers Betty Maher, Lois Rinehimer and Leslie Hagen are proud members of “DBC Dannie’s Dragons”. The team is named in honor of Dannie Manning who was a founding member of DragonBoat Charleston.

Dragon boat racing started in China. The boats traditionally feature decorative dragon heads at the bow. A team consists of 20 paddlers, a coach and a colorfully costumed drummer setting the rowing pace. South Carolina’s first team formed in Charleston and dragon boat racing is now enjoyed by participants state-wide and across America
