Town of Seabrook Island Winter Weather Advisory Update

Date: 5 January 2018

Time: 11:00 am

Representatives of the Town took part in a Charleston County conference call at 10:00 am on 5 January. National Weather Service stated temperatures should be above freezing beginning around 11:00 am on 5 January with highs in upper 30’s similar to 4 January. Overnight low 5 January will be in the upper teen’s to low 20’s in Charleston County. Winter weather advisory continues until 11:00 am 5 January. NWS may reinstate the advisory evening of 5 January. Any liquid left on the roads will freeze and result in black ice. Similar forecast for Saturday, 6 January. Sunday, 7 January temperatures should reach 40’s during the day and will be at, or just above freezing in the evening. No precipitation is expected until 8 January.

South Carolina Department of Transportation reports that there remains a reduced, but still a significant risk of icing on the roads – particularly after nightfall. SC DOT and Charleston County Public Works are working to clear all primary and some secondary roads in the County. It is important to note that as of 10:00 am 5 January, SCDOT had not plowed or sanded Betsy Kerrison, Bohicket or Main roads. Charleston Airport remains closed and will re-examine its operating status at 3:00 pm 5 January.

Town of Seabrook Island will remain closed 5 January and reopen for regular business hours 8 January.

We continue to encourage all residents to drive only when absolutely necessary, particularly when the temperatures start to drop, as the roads are expected to re-freeze during overnight hours.

Representatives of the Town expect to participate in a Charleston County conference call at 3:00 pm 5 January and a further update will be issued thereafter.

For emergency response, call 911.
