Oyster Shell Recycling

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) operates an oyster shell recycling program. The intent of the program is to provide drop-off locations for discarded oyster shells. A summary of the program and drop-off locations can be found here. The nearest drop-off locations are the Johns Island Bin at Gilligan’s Restaurant on Main Rd and the James Island Bin at SCDNR Headquarters on Ft Johnson Rd. Discarded oyster shells should not be dumped on Seabrook Island in the woods or in the marsh. Please take discarded oyster shells to a designated recycle bin location so they may be recycled properly.
