On Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 8:00 am, we will gather at The Seabrook Island Lake House to take a field trip to the Ace Basin Wildlife Management Areas of Donnelley and Bear Island. We will form carpools for the 70-minute drive; if traveling alone please plan on meeting at the Donnelley entrance office at around 9:00 am.
You should plan on spending about 2-3 hours traveling through both areas by vehicle, stopping at key locations for photo opportunities. Both Donnelley and Bear Island have detailed driving tour maps that locate all the key locations for stopping and viewing. Along the driving tour, you will see an abandoned 20th-century farmhouse, swamp areas, salt marshes, many species of birds and waterfowl, alligators, and other wildlife.
Maps and information sheets will be provided to you at The Lake House or the Donnelley office gathering spot. There will be no water or food available, so please pack your own to bring with you. We are working with the SCDNR to provide a WMA employee to meet us and discuss the history of the Ace Basin and Donnelley. There are three websites you may be interested in reading or downloading:
